Our client has an immediate requirement for a CAD Manager with experience of BIM and Micro-station to work on rail projects. The client with whom we are working are an international multi-disciplinary consultancy with over 5,000 employees working from its 100 offices around the world.

The principal function of this position is to:

  • Undertake the management of the CAD team on rail projects
  • Maintain and manage 2D/3D CAD design and drawing production workflow including technical liaison/interface with client
  • Lead by example and perform CAD 3D tasks and all usual CAD activities
  • Understand different needs of the project delivery team and client (i.e. architects, engineers, managers and contractors/suppliers)
  • Maintain close contact and manage working relationships with design teams, engineers and all other related parties/stakeholders in order to maintain an understanding of the constantly changing issues of the project.
  • Aspects of the position will also involve training, guidance and support, CAD and BIM standards enforcement, and ultimately ensuring that the project CAD/ BIM workflow operates successfully to deliver agreed CAD/BIM data on time and to budget.

Key Responsibilities

The priority of this role is to acceptance of responsibility for total CAD function/workflow on the rail project. Candidate shall maintain relevant CAD standards for the project and possess the following:

  • Good knowledge and experience of all normal CAD activities
  • Familiarity with industry-wide CAD methodologies (essential)
  • Thorough knowledge of CAD platforms and standards. Good knowledge and experience of 3D CAD/BIM and rail standards (essential)
  • Provide effective CAD support and management
  • Develop capability in 4D CAD/BIM
  • Trouble-shooter/ Objective decision making in times of crisis
  • Add value (within budgetary/contractual constraints)
  • Pro-active champion of CAD/BIM techniques and delivery

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and experience. These points should align with the key areas of responsibility listed above: 

     Knowledge

  • Degree and/or Higher National qualifications related to architecture, engineering or Civils construction (Essential)
  • Specialist knowledge and contractual/technical expertise in Building Information Modelling (BIM), Computer Aided Design (CAD) and integrated Project Delivery (IPD)
  • Specialist knowledge and experience in application of Bentley V8i CAD and data management tools including MicroStation V8i, Bentley building Architecture, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical packages (Essential)
  • Experienced in the use of ProjectWise Navigator V8i for clash detection, and sequencing (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of Bentley ProjectWise V8i Engineering Content Management System (Essential)
  • Working Knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Ability to use Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop
  • Ability to use and integrate Microsoft Office Products with CAD data
  • Experienced in the creation and management of Bentley imodels and 3D PDF data
  • Ability to work exclusively in 3D, produce renderings, drawings and animations as required
  • Preparation of project related CAD for use in specialist engineering design and analysis packages
  • Specialist knowledge of the collaborative processes/workflow defined in BS1192 (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of data/information exchange protocols.
  • Experienced in deployment/configuration of a common data environment to enable collaborative production and management of project’s engineering design data.
  • Working knowledge of relevant British and ISO industry standards.
  • Basic knowledge of IT and network infrastructure principles.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles.
  • A disciplined, logical and objective approach to technical tasks
  • Experience in the UK rail transportation sector
  • Understanding project workflows (design development, construction documentation phases) and project management

     Skills & Proven Ability

  • Methodical and analytical approach to work, persistent nature and integrity for maintaining comprehensive and accurate CAD/BIM data
  • Managing the organisation and structure of CAD files in a ProjectWise environment
  • Ability to identify the need for change, initiate and implement change
  • Ability to influence people within the project team, to drive true change
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks where client/external contractors could potentially claim
  • Ability to define, analyse, resource and prioritise and manage business project requirements
  • Ability to directly and functionally manage multidisciplinary CAD teams
  • Ability to analyse complex data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations to senior management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people at all levels across the project and externally.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships, with people at all levels across the project and externally.
  • Good technical background
  • Strong teaching mentoring and coaching skills to bring new team members up to speed with respect to CAD/BIM
  • All aspects of CAD problem-solving/troubleshooting
  • Ability to command respect of team members, peers and clients commensurate with experience

     Experience

  • Experience of managing CAD/BIM processes on large multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
  • Experience of assessing CAD/BIM user capability and competence
  • Functional management of large numbers of multi-disciplinary engineers
  • Experience of building relationships with, and influencing, a range of people at all levels within and outside the organisation.
  • Experience of providing professional and technical advice, guidance and support.
  • Experience of carrying out technical document review and analysis.
  • Experience in producing scopes of work and estimating time management and reporting
  • Experience of working in a construction or engineering environment.
  • Experience in the UK rail transportation sector including LU/Tfl is preferred
  • Awareness of new technologies

The jobholder must be familiar with relevant CDM and comply with the necessary statutory requirements. These will include the Health & Safety at Work Act, Fire Precautions Act 1971 and associated regulations.
