    ROLE OVERVIEW:

    The Senior Public Health Engineers role will involve ensuring the completion of projects by actively driving design initiatives, acting as a key point of contact and information, developing designs and working through calculations.  The Public Health Engineer shall demonstrate excellent skills in engineering design and be experienced working on projects from inception to completion without supervision across various sectors (notably but not limited to commercial and residential). The Public Health Engineer will be involved all aspects of design for Public Health and Fire Protection engineering across all our project sectors. In addition to the above, they will also be responsible for improving our quality control and standards, working within a team and by helping our business develop. They will design, manage and deliver the public health design in accordance with all codes and practices/standards, delivering professional and positive service within a team environment.

    DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES

    Design

    • Design safe, economical and reliable Public Health systems (including designing below ground drainage systems, blue roof drain systems, soil and waste systems, hot and cold-water domestic services, rainwater disposal systems (including harvesting, attenuation), fire protection systems, gas system design) to meet the contractual scope of work and comply with the applicable standards and regulations.
    • Development and preparation of Public Health design calculations, drawings, specifications, and tender documents to define Public Health systems.
    • Preparation of outline scheme report / technical content of the design information.
    • Check tender submissions, drawings and technical submittals to ensure quality of products and equipment are in accordance with design.
    • Coordinate Public Health design with other disciplines (e.g. architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical) to minimise conflicts and avoid costly revisions.
    • Attend site to undertake acquisition surveys on behalf of the client culminating in detailed report.
    • Attend site to survey existing Public Health systems in relation to project refurbishments.
    • Attend site during construction and review Public Health systems for quality and compliance where appointed to do so.
    • Undertake site visits and monitor progress against the design with minimal supervision.
    • Assist subcontractors to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications and resolve problems during construction.
    • Undertake peer reviews on Public Health systems on a variety of projects designed by others.
    • Able to complete internal audits of Public Health designs performed by others.

    Management

    • Be aware of design deliverables on each project, the agreed fee/programme, and be able to work within those parameters when delivering Public Health design.
    • Monitor workload against deliverables at regular intervals.
    • Work cohesively and positively with the other members of the internal and external team when delivering the Public Health design.
    • Attend design workshops and design team meetings where appropriate in relation to the Public Health design.
    • Be a focal point of knowledge and help to other engineers looking to improve their knowledge in Public Health design.
    • Assist with planning work schedules to meet project programmes.
    • Provide regular updates to line manager.
    • Utilise a high level of oral and written communication (report writing, in particular) to ensure clarity of communication both internally and externally.
    • Build relationships and contacts with potential sources of new work, maintain existing relationships.
    • On occasion assist with the delivery of presentations and pitches.
    • Coordinate with other discipline engineers as applicable for the continuity of the design process.
    • Attend progress, design team and coordination meetings where required.
    • Provide input to pre-qualification and selection of contractors, respond to tender queries, comment and review tender returns.
    • Obtain the necessary information from stakeholders both internally and externally (e.g. Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Design Consultants) to enable the design to proceed.
    • Lead on all Public Health design related activities both internally and externally to their resolution.
    • Identify and meet effectively the requirements and expectations of clients.
    • Provide support at all stages of the design process on related projects, in particular bring specialist insight into the concept design stage to ensure the subsequent design stages are developed with a winning strategy and appropriate level of innovation.

    Health & Safety

    • Ensure adherence to H&S standards and requirements at all times and ensure that all activities are performed in a safe manner.
    • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the CDM Regulations and their implementation when carrying out all duties.
    • Be able to formulate design risk assessments relating to Public Health services from inception through each design stage.
    • Use and maintain appropriate PPE.
    • Report all accidents/incidents or near misses.

    Quality Assurance

    • Ensure the relevant QA procedures are followed.
    • Maintain, develop and retain the highest appropriate standard of technical skill.
    • Ensure the project work complies with the Project Management Plan and Programme.

    Technical

    • Demonstrate an understanding of BSRIA BG6 2018, RIBA stages, Part L, BREEAM, renewable technologies and soft landings, and their implications to each stage of the Public Health design process.
    • Demonstrate a reasonable understanding of other MEP engineering disciplines, other than your own, sufficient to understand their impact in the overall design, and converse at a reasonable level.
    • Develop ability to use AutoCAD and Revit.
    • Undertake Continual Professional Development by reading technical journals, attending relevant IEE/CIBSE technical seminars from time to time and attending in house seminars aimed at increasing technical and operational knowledge.

    Financial

    • Develop understanding of project costing principles and control changes during project development.
    • May on occasion assist with preparation of fee proposals.
    • Maintain required level of utilisation and complete timesheet on a weekly basis.
    • Keep line manager up to date with progress against deliverables and identify where and why time deadlines cannot be met.
    • Utilise Union Square to populate project information, manage resource, include financial information and monitor progress relating the Public Health Design.

    Project Interface

    • Attend design team and client meetings, on occasion as the company’s only representative.
    • Liaise with clients and others to obtain technical and operational information relating to the projects.
    • Keep project documentation up-to-date and comply with file management protocols.

This is a full-time hybrid role (3 days working from the office, 2 days from home).   Responsibilities: Able to produce designs, drawings, schematics, diagrams, project survey, design reports and specifications and risk assessments for:

    • Medical Gases (Argon, Compressed Air, Helium, CO2, O2 and others), Manifold Gas Design
    • Laboratories water (different grades and applications)
    • Gas distribution systems include toxic, inert and flammable gas manifold distribution systems and specialist gas detection systems.
    • Liquid nitrogen, oxygen depletion calculations, to inform the requirements for gas detection
    • plug and play swagelok gas design.
    • Sanitary Plumbing, Sitewide Drainage, Radioactive Drainage, Laboratory Drainage,
    • Domestic water services, Laboratory water services, Treated Water services, Boiler feed water, Cooling tower make up water, Domestic Sanitary plumbing.
    • Fire suppression protection systems
    • Being available for ad-hoc task to support the wider business such as is required.
      Requirements:
    • Proven experience working in a Public Health Engineering position for 3+ years (essential), preferably within the construction/design sector.
    • Experience in the commissioning of the services and problem-solving of installed systems ensuring full operation and function prior to handover.
    • UK design experience necessary with knowledge of CIBSE, IEC, BS, ISO and EN Standards Familiarity with UK & EU regulations.
    • Knowledge of the MS Office suite, particularly Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Bluebeam/Revu and Excel. Experience with Revit would be desirable but is not essential.
    • Excellent organisation skills, comfortable juggling multiple projects and priorities in a busy and dynamic environment.
    • Ability to work to tight deadlines while under pressure.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to present complex information and clearly articulate business requests all levels of the business.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in any additional language(s) would be desirable but is not essential.
    Desirable:
    • Understanding and selection of Effluent Treatment Plants for Pharmaceutical and Biosafety Containment Laboratories.
    • Specialist water systems design: Reverse Osmosis systems, Water for Injection, Purified Water.
    • Project team Lead experience
    • CIBSE Chartered Engineer qualification would be desirable but is not essential.
