The Company

Our client is an established Mechanical and Electrical Building Services consultancy with a strong track record of delivering projects across a diverse range of sectors with a particular focus on healthcare and education.

They provide a comprehensive building services engineering service encompassing MEP design, project management, project appraisal, surveys and feasibility studies, Building Regulations compliance and BIM requirements.

Working across projects of varying size and complexity, the consultancy has developed a strong base of repeat clients through a collaborative approach to design and a focus on providing practical, technically robust and cost-effective engineering solutions.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join an established consultancy and take responsibility for the technical and commercial delivery of projects.

Reporting to a Principal Design Engineer, you will develop projects from initial sketches and design briefs through detailed design and delivery. The position combines hands-on mechanical design with project management, client liaison, commercial responsibility and the supervision and development of other engineers.

You will be expected to bring original thought, judgement and initiative to projects, developing appropriate engineering solutions while taking responsibility for the technical and financial decisions associated with their delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop initial sketch designs and design briefs in response to client and project requirements
  • Undertake detailed mechanical building services design, including energy assessments
  • Take responsibility for the selection and development of appropriate engineering systems
  • Apply independent technical judgement and engineering principles to project design and delivery
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant Standards, Codes of Practice and Regulations
  • Manage the engineering design function on allocated projects, including design preparation, supervision and costing
  • Manage projects to agreed programmes, budgets and quality standards
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and understand the fundamental design parameters affecting multidisciplinary projects
  • Assist with the preparation of CAD drawings and clearly communicate design requirements to CAD Technicians
  • Undertake surveys of existing buildings and prepare reports covering mechanical services, condition, capacity, regulatory compliance and energy performance
  • Maintain effective client liaison and develop strong client relationships
  • Supervise, mentor and support engineers, technicians and trainees
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of internal technical standards and procedures
  • Evaluate projects and investigate technical issues and failures where required
  • Maintain effective project administration, cost control and programme management
  • Manage internal and external project costs

Requirements

The successful candidate will be an experienced Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer capable of operating with a high degree of independence and taking ownership of both the technical and commercial aspects of projects.

You should have:

  • A detailed understanding of the principles and design parameters associated with mechanical building services
  • Strong mechanical building services design experience, including energy assessment
  • A working understanding of the basic principles and design requirements of other building services disciplines
  • The ability to develop projects from initial concept and sketch design through to detailed design and delivery
  • Strong knowledge of relevant UK Standards, Codes of Practice and Regulations
  • Experience undertaking building surveys and producing technical reports
  • The ability to exercise independent technical judgement and develop appropriate engineering solutions
  • Experience managing projects, including programmes, costs and quality
  • The ability to supervise and support other members of an engineering team
  • Good CAD awareness and the ability to communicate design requirements effectively to CAD Technicians
  • Strong client-facing and communication skills
  • The ability to work independently, manage multiple responsibilities and maintain project delivery against programme

The Role

This is a senior position within the practice and provides the opportunity to take genuine ownership of projects, from the development of the initial engineering solution through to technical delivery, commercial management and client liaison.

The successful engineer will also play an important role in supporting the development of less experienced members of the team and improving internal engineering standards and procedures.

Continued professional development will be encouraged, with the successful candidate expected to maintain an up-to-date understanding of developments in mechanical building services engineering, Standards and Regulations.
